Wexford Pantomime Society is back with another magical adventure – Sleeping Beauty! Now in our 57th year, we invite you to join us for a show filled with laughter, music, dance and the unforgettable sparkle that always features in a Wexford Panto!
Our story opens with a joyous celebration at the palace as King Stefan and Queen Clara introduce their baby daughter, Princess Aurora. Joxer the court jester, our loveable comic guide, brings the audience along as the Good Fairies arrive to bestow their blessings. But the festivities are rudely interrupted when the wicked evil fairy Maleficent crashes the party, furious at not being invited. She casts a cruel curse: on her eighteenth birthday, Aurora will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die. Thankfully, the Good Fairies soften the spell, ensuring that instead Aurora will fall into a deep sleep, broken only by true love’s kiss.
To protect her, Aurora is hidden deep in the forest, raised as “Briar Rose” by her three fairy godmothers. Alongside them, we meet a variety of hilarious, yet slightly crazy, characters such as the evil fairy’s henchmen Victor and Vivian, an army of trolls and of course, the hilarious Dame, Nurse Nelly Numb-Bum! Amidst this comic chaos, Aurora grows into a beautiful young woman, and fate leads her to cross paths with Prince Philip. Though neither knows the other’s true identity, their hearts are quickly entwined.
But danger is never far away. Maleficent’s spies discover Aurora, and soon the dreadful curse comes to pass. With Aurora in a deep sleep and imprisoned in Maleficent’s lair, it falls to Prince Philip, Joxer, the Good Fairies, and our unforgettable Dame to embark on a daring rescue. Along the way, they battle trolls, brave haunted woods, and even befriend an unexpectedly cuddly Big Bad Wolf. Will true love be strong enough to break the curse? Can Prince Philip, Joxer, Nurse Nelly and their friends outwit the wicked Maleficent before it’s too late? Join us to find out!
Written and directed by Thomas O’Leary, choreographed by Suzanne O’Leary and with Musical Direction by Yvette White; this dazzling production, featuring a talented, local front-line and over 100 young people in our chorus and choir, is packed with show-stopping dance numbers, toe-tapping music, outrageous comedy for all ages, and all the magic you expect from Wexford’s best-loved Panto.
